Owasso, a quiet, family-oriented community, lies northeast of the city of Tulsa. As part of Oklahoma’s Green Country, it is located in an absolutely breathtaking region filled with hills, pastures and various bodies of water. Owasso has a population of roughly 35,784, bringing it to the status of Tulsa’s third largest suburb. The small yet growing city is well known for being a community drive area. Each year, the town performs the annual OSNI-Owasso Cares Day of Service where volunteers spend their time cleaning and conserving their city. The effort received the Innovation Award at the Keep Oklahoma Beautiful Annual Environmental Excellence Awards Program in 2013. And a variety of bronze statues of an active young boy and girl reside in various locations of the city, an arts initiative known as the Timmy and Cindy project. The statues serve the purpose of reminding everyone of what makes Owasso great — community.
In 1881, the Owasso area became a settlement, originally named Elm Creek, after a nearby stream. As industry began to pour into Oklahoma, the Oklahoma Central and Southwestern Railway Company began building a railway line to connect the northern town of Bartlesville and the Owasso area. Residents of Elm Creek moved their settlement to the site of the railway. The railway brought with it new people and development and the growing area was renamed to Owasso, an Osage Indian word meaning the end or turn around, due to the end and turning point of the railroad resting in the depot community.
Owasso provides some of Tulsa top schools. Larkin Bailey Elementary School, Northeast Elementary School and Pamela Hodson Elementary are rated in the top 10 elementary schools for the Tulsa surrounding area. Larkin Baily Elementary, which has great academics and teachers, is ranked highest at number 5. The overall Owasso Public School district also ranks within the top 20 districts for all of Oklahoma, making the region a great place for homeowners looking to raise a family
As a family-oriented city, Owasso offers a great variety of activities for adult and kids alike. A golf lovers dream, the city has some of the most beautiful golf courses including Bailey Ranch Golf Course, considered to be one of the most challenging and fun courses in the region. The club even offers deals for kids 17 and under to play for free on specific days, making it an affordable location for families to enjoy time together. And to find “Affordable Championship Golf,” the Owasso Golf and Athletic Club regularly hosts the Lindsey Cup Finals as well as numerous PGA junior championships. It is a challenging and exciting course for all who love to golf.
Downtown Owasso houses the Redbud District, a great place to find quaint, unique shops, food and fun. From vintage home décor shops to elegant boutiques to subs and bakeries, it’s a great place to make a great find. The area is expecting substantial development meant to bring in more businesses, heighten the landscaping and look, as well as promote Owasso’s history. And while other shopping and eateries exist like the Smith Farms Marketplace and Owasso Market, Owasso offers a short trip on Interstate 75 to downtown Tulsa with no shortage of places to eat or shop.
