Notable Charm

The small yet growing city is well known for being a community drive area. The effort received the Innovation Award at the Keep Oklahoma Beautiful Annual Environmental Excellence Awards Program in 2013. And a variety of bronze statues of an active young boy and girl reside in various locations of the city, an arts initiative known as the Timmy and Cindy project. The statues serve the purpose of reminding everyone of what makes Owasso great — community.

Backstory

In 1881, the Owasso area became a settlement, originally named Elm Creek, after a nearby stream. As industry began to pour into Oklahoma, the Oklahoma Central and Southwestern Railway Company began building a railway line to connect the northern town of Bartlesville and the Owasso area. Residents of Elm Creek moved their settlement to the site of the railway. The railway brought with it new people and development and the growing area was renamed to Owasso, an Osage Indian word meaning the end or turn around, due to the end and turning point of the railroad resting in the depot community.
